In the first century there were 27 individual Christian writings produced by various authors in various places at various times.  By the fourth-fifth centuries, these writings existed in a single collection called the New Testament as part of a greater collection called the Bible.  When you stop and think about it – which most of us don’t – it’s quite a remarkable transition, deserving of a better explanation than we have given it.
